Our New House

This is a view of our new living situation in Los Gatos, California. (Click on the picture to get a larger image.) It is a stand-alone house on one floor, with a porch/deck. Several changes will happen before we move, including trimming some of the bushes (which I am resisting—I don’t want everyone looking into the place), extending the kitchen out into the porch, and replacing the porch, perhaps without the overhang. We are going to California at the end of the month to make decisions about interior design and some of these other changes.

The plan now is to move about the first of April. We have not yet decided what to do about the house in Louisville—to sell, lease, or leave vacant. The first job is to select what to take to Los Gatos. We have become very comfortable in a 3000sq/ft house, and will move to 1200sq/ft.(!)

The house is one of 20 in a small neighborhood owned by the Presbyterian Board of Pensions. All the houses are similar, though there are a few three-bedroom houses (ours has two). We are not allowed to make major exterior changes, in order to keep the harmony of the units. This is a community for retired Presbyterian clergy and missionaries and their spouses. It is only housing, and does not have central facilities, assisted living, or full nursing care. Several of our friends are currently there, so we will be moving into a community with some relationships already established.

This may not be the optimum for what Ruth and I want. However, it is the most agreeable arrangement we could find, especially given the high cost of housing in California. The payment to the Board of Pensions is truly minimal for this area, and well within our means. That will give us the possibilities for volunteer in mission, and the travel we want to do.

We will post more information as it unfolds.
