65 Hours of Birthday
posted by Ruth on June 25, 2002 at 10:20 PM

Though its been weeks since the Big celebration, I still remember the whole event with clarity. Heather, David, Sarah and Zoni with help from David, Katie, Brian, Amy and Kim planned 65 Hours of Birthday for me that lasted from 7:00 a.m., May 17 to Midnight, May 19th.

The whole thing began with a surprise breakfast in bed at 7:00 a.m. on May 17th. I was presented with a schedule of everything that was going to happen in the next 65 hours. At 8:00 a.m., David and Heather told me about a future hot air balloon ride (it was so cold and rainy that the ride had to be postponed).

Since our community was having a garage sale on the 18th, we had already planned to take advantage of it and participate by putting some things out for sale. Well, I got ambitious knowing that we have a lot of scaling down to do in the next year. So from 9:00 to noon, garage sale preparation was scheduled.
We all worked on it.

At noon David and I went to Winston’s for lunch. It is a restaurant where the food is cooked by chefs-in-training at the Sullivan Culinary School here. The wait staff are also part of the student body. I had never been there and had wanted to eat there for sometime. It was the first time I had had “pressed hot tea”. Very nice. That afternoon we were supposed to go to a new place in town called Glassworks where a former colleague is the building manager. They have galleries as well as glass blowers actually producing works of art. But David didn’t know how to get hold of Robb to give us a tour, and we needed more garage prep. time, so we dug in again.

At 5:00, we dressed for dinner (all 4 of us) and went to one of our favorite new places called the 3rd Street Cafe. On the third Friday of the month, a group plays celtic and other folk music for two hours from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. One person plays hammered dulcimer, one a guitar, and the third flute and other such instruments. Sometimes they have one or two others with them. We all had a marvelous time even though rain was the order of the day. When we came home, we were going to play games, but instead finished the garage sale prep. and went to bed so we could get up early and get the stuff outside.

5:00 a.m. dawned on the 18th with three of the four of us up and about (with Zoni’s help). I don’t know how Sarah slept through that part, but we had folks show up a little after 7:00 a.m. even though it wasn’t supposed to start until 8:00 a.m. David made a run to Starbucks and got Cappucino etc. as Heather and I started selling stuff. Its truly amazing to see what people will buy. Heather is a great marketing and sales person. Sarah woke up about 9:00 a.m. and had a drink waiting for her too. Its was very cold that day, so we were wearing sweaters and sweatshirts. We finished the sale at 2:00 p.m. and loaded the Subaru with stuff which the three of them took to Good Will. We were supposed to have a home spa visit, but instead I was given gift certificates to have a facial and my nails done french style. At 3:00 p.m., we went to Waterfront Park to a plant show. Sarah got her face painted and looked beautfiul. At 5:00 p.m. we were supposed to go for a Horse and Carriage ride, but all agreed it was just too cold.

At 6:00 p.m., David and I went to Vincenzo’s for dinner. I had never been there and it is rated as one of the best restaurants in town. It was great. When we got home, I checked the messages on the web birthday card that David II had set up for me as a birthday present from he and Katie. (Thanks for your contributions). I was then given Amy and Brian’s gift which was two silk pillowcases that are sold by an on-line allergy prevention shop. They are lovely to sleep on. I use one at home and one on the road.

Sunday morning breakfast was served in bed again and was hilarious. Heather made an egg/tortilla casserole and baked it in the oven. Sarah decided there should be candles on it, so candles were put on it when it came out of the oven. Well, the candles started melting buried in the casserole, and by the time the casserole made it to the bedroom, they were listing to the side dramatically. We all dug wax out of our servings. At 10:00 we went to church. We were supposed to go for a picnic and hike in Bernheim Forest after church, but the weather still was cold. So since there was an Asian Festival at the Speed Art Museum that afternoon, we went there and all of us had a great time looking at performances, doing crafts, etc.

The rest of the evening, we really relaxed, saw a video, etc. And we were all in bed long before midnight, though Heather may have still been up. So Glassworks and the Hot Air Balloon Ride as well as a horse and carriage ride are still to happen. Hope we can find a horse and carriage ride where Sarah and Heather can be along for the ride somewhere sometime.

Quite a birthday!!!! Kudos to everyone who participated, with special commendation and kisses to Heather and David for planning the whole event. The best birthday I ever had certainly was a big success.
