A Change in Plans
posted by David on April 22, 2002 at 10:54 PM
Today was THE day at the Presbyterian Center—the day for downsizing the organization by retiring or rif’ing (reduction in force) 12% of the staff. We had known this was coming for several weeks, and those of us over 65 had been given an option for early retirement. Ruth and I compared all the options, and realized that the best bet was to be fired, but anticipated that would not happen. One reason is that I had given word that I was going to retire this year, and, since the major concern was saving on the 2003 budget, I would fit into the plans by being gone then. My plan was to finish several projects, including the effort in Africa.
I did not read the body language correctly, nor read between the lines accurately. My position was one of the rif’ed. That means my job is going to be terminated on May 3. It also means I will receive “notice” pay of six months, and “separation” pay of 15 weeks—I maxxed out the service extensions. The end result is that I will be on the payroll until February 15, 2003, though I will not be working. The other result is that I will conclude with over $10,000 more than I would have if I retired on December 31. So—plans are changing.

God sure has a way of taking care of us doesn't he. Sounds great!! Now you can come out here to California more often to visit your granddaughter in her new home (and the rest of us Californians).
God Bless
Doug

I take it Mom's status hasn't changed? Does this change her retirement plans?

Great news! Now this will give you more time to decide where you want to move!! With a daughter now in Pasadena, maybe you should think about California. I have not been aware of the dates for Ruth's retirement. Is it in the summer or fall?
We are so excited about having Kim and Heather and Sarah here in Pasadena. We have not called Kim yet but do want him to come up for a weekend. At the moment, it looks like May 25th is the only open Saturday. I can't believe we are this busy!!! May 11 and 12th is open but that is Mother's day and Kim may want to go back to San Diego and we should probably go to Pasadena!! But we will work it out with him.
Congratulations on retirement.

For all of you asking the question about my plans, right now I am still planning to work until the end of the year at least. David is going to take over several things here at home as well as get going with a bunch of stuff he is interested in learning/doing. So we'll see.
We are having a nice time with Heather, Sarah and Zoni. Everyone is pretty settled in now. Ruth
