Trout Lake

We had a little windfall last week. Katie’s boss had reserved one of Alaska’s public use cabins for Friday and Saturday, but was unable to use it, so he offered it to us. We weren’t able to get out of town on Friday due to some packing and dog issues, but by Saturday morning, we had Auggie boarded, packs loaded, Lola situated in the back of the truck and were headed down the Seward Highway for Cooper Landing.

The cabin we were going to is on Trout Lake, at the southern end of Resurrection Pass Trail. The hike in is about seven-and-a-half miles. It’s been years since either of us did any sort of real backpacking, so the packs got a little heavy, but otherwise we couldn’t have asked for a better trip.

The sun was out, the sky was blue, the trail had just enough crunchy old snow on it to give us firm footing without being slippery or mushy, and the scenery was incredible.

A small saddle between two mountains at the other end of the lake gave us a nice glow at sunset and the night was crystal clear with so many stars that I had trouble picking out constellations as familiar as Orion.

We got our water from a little meadow where the lake ran out into a creek through Resurrection Pass and there was just enough wood on the ground to get the cabin’s wood stove heated up before we went to sleep and again when we got up.

The hike out was just as nice, although the wind kicked up just a little. It was the kind of amazing solitude that makes you wonder what it must have been like up here before roads and railroads and planes.

If anyone ever wonders why we live up here, point them to this page.
