New Osteoporosis Drug

posted by David on November 27, 2002 at 09:22 AM

The FDA has approved a new drug for building bone mass. This is some pretty exciting news, because although Katie’s had some improvement with the Fosomax, it hasn’t been as rapid or successful as we had hoped.

I heard about this on the news today, and it sounds terrific. In the report I heard, though, it sounded like the drug would only be available to certain patients. Will Katie be eligible?

I sure hope so. I have "official" osteoporosis as it is defined in medical terms ( greater than 2.6 Standard Deviations below the mean for my age group) and I have suffered a spontaneous compression fracture of my spine. In addition I have been taking all available drugs with no statistically significant improvement over the last 2 years. Not to mention the fact that my bones have to last me a lot longer than an 85 year old with osteoporosis. My endocrincologist told me a month or so ago that i was "at the top of her list" for this new drug once it hit the market. It involves daily injections, but who cares?

I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Katie

I am 41 and was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 36 yrs old. It sounds like you are also young to have this problem. How old are you? I have taken Miacalcin and Fosamax and now Actonel. I do not like the limitations on eating or drinking in the morning. I am very interested in investigating the new injectable medication. Have you tried it yet?

Hello,
I have also been diagnosed with official osteo.I couldn't believe it. I had a hysterectomy when I was 40 years old. No serious problems. Just suggested by my physician, since I wasn't going to have anymore children. She told me I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT UTERUS CANCER LATER IN YEARS.Because I have breast cancer in my family I cjose not to take hrt. I thought my diet was good. Turns out my bones are bad. I am on actonel.Just started. I hate taking pills. My stomach hates it too. I would be interested in the injections. Wish they would come out with a weekly. Also think it should be covered by insurances. So many people have osteo these days...Please let me know if they ever come out with the injections or a liquid. thanks, sheila
